Animatic

This animatic feels thin are drawn out towards the end. Therefore I'm going to draw some additional shots to increase the length of the music video, as well as make it feel more full and complete.

Storyboards

Mid shot of a couple lying in bed, but the focus is on the bedside table where a phone lies. The Man get's out of bed and answers the phone.

Close up of The Man putting the phone back down. (Hits the beat of the song)

Back to original mid shot of the room with the bed still out of focus.  The bands name appear on screen like an old style/film noir fashion.

The shot moves closer to the bed with an elliptical edit, the text changes to the title of the song.

The next four shots of the mise-en-scene suggest to the audience what happened the night before. The first is a closeup of a man's sock.

The next close-up is of a crunched up beer can.

Then a closeup of a burnt out cigarette in an uncleaned ash tray.

The final shot is a closeup of the female's underwear on the floor.

Medium long-shot of The Man sat on the edge of the bed, he sings along to the song. The Woman then sits up in bed and leans in to whisper in the man's ear.

Extreme close up of The Woman whispering in the man's ear. What she whispers follows the lyrics, as she says them, the words literally come out of her mouth.

Close up of The Man, still miming the song. He shakes his head and looks down.

The camera follows his gaze through an elliptical edit to a close up of The Woman's hand stroking down The Man's torso.

Cut to a mid shot, The Man 'throws' the camera away.

The camera swings in in the same movement as was pushed in the last shot through a 'push out' transition. Mid shot of The Man sat at the kitchen table eating his toast. The Woman is circling him, screaming and complaining.

This shot is a POV shot, and to emphasise this, I'm going to use a fish-eye (wide angle) lens cap for my camera. The shot is a mid shot of The Woman throwing a punch towards the camera.

Again is another POV shot through a wide angle mid shot. The Man falls to the ground after taking a punch from the woman. Slow motion until collision with floor.

Medium close up of The Man lying on the ground. The Woman steps onto his back. He continues to mime the song to the camera.

Close up of The Man inside an audio booth singing the pre chorus of the song.

Long shot of three men walking down the street in slow motion. The Man is the man in the centre.

Cut to a close up of the three men, they all pull down balaclavas over their faces. Still in slow motion.

Medium shot of The Man hanging out a car window. As they drive passed a mail box, he hits it with a baseball bat (to the beat of the song.)

Medium long shot of a man struggling from The Man, he manages to pull off the balaclava before being thrown to the ground.

Close up of The Man spinning a hammer in his hand.

POV wide angle medium close up of The Man bringing down the hammer continuously toward the camera.

Close up of feet walking down the street away from the camera, in slow motion.

He sits down on the sofa next to The Woman. Close up of him lighting a cigarette. He passes it to The Woman and the camera follows.

The Woman takes off The Man's belt before tying it round his arm. Close up of her patting his wrist.

Out of focus shot (dreamlike) of the man tightening the belt with his teeth. As the song continues the lyrics 'feeling good' appear on the screen.

Medium long shot of the three man sat round a table in a local pub. The camera cuts to each character at a close up.

Close up of The Man downing the final bits of his drink.

Close up of the man inside an audio booth singing the pre chorus of the song.

Long shot of The Man threatening someone down an alley.

Mid shot of The Man attacking the other man with a hammer. Cuts to a closer shot with each hammer strike.

Long shot of the man cleaning his face and hands in a pond.

Close up of bar staff pulling a pint. As they place it on the desk, cut to next shot.

Over the shoulder mid shot of The Man as he picks up his pint.

Establishing long shot of a night club.

Medium close up of The Man nodding his head to the music. (slow motion)

Long shot of the DJ.

Medium close up of The Man nodding his head to the music, a lot more energetic than the previous shot of this type. (slow motion)

Close up of The Man inside an audio booth singing the final chorus of the song.

Other Kodaline Videos

I have had a look into other music videos by the same artist (The Milk) to get an idea of how their videos are structured to fit the genre of their music.

My Audience

I'm looking to attract the mainstream audience of the male gender, at the age of 16-24. It may appeal additionally appeal to women due to a male lead role, however, the narrative to my music video is slightly stereotypical about women.

Media Evaluation

As preparation for my A2 coursework, the course class were divided into groups and given the task to recreate thirty seconds of a music video/short film. My group consisted of Connor McDonnell, Jay Bell, Josh Worthington and myself. As a group, we chose to recreate a short film called Sinéad by the band Within Temptation. The four of us were decided on key roles for us to play throughout the task. I was in charge of the editing of the footage. Josh and Jay were both in control in directions. And Connor was the group’s producer as well as cinematographer. However, we all contributed evenly overall.

Before even starting any filming, we had to go through the pre-production. This involved story boarding our shots, as well as creating a production plan with inclusion of a list of available actors and available locations as well as the time and dates of which we planned to film.

During the production process, we encountered many problems with recreating the same feel of the original video. This was due to the short space of time we had at create the video, while having to have key members, such as actors outside the group, being free to contribute. The locations never really had the same feel as the ones in the original video for we were limited to using other areas apart from inside the college. Filming within a college always gives the film or video an office-like feel, however, I feel in our video, we avoided the office feel with the use on dark lighting and focused spotlighting. Additionally, we were set back a bit due to the loss of our original location that we had previously filmed in. Therefore, we had to improvise, and had to be careful not to show too much of the location within other shots. Our film was filmed in a total of four different locations, whereas the original is filmed in one. However, I feel that we managed to keep the continuity of the film.

We also encountered problems during the post-production process, as we unfortunately lost a memory card with some footage on it. As well as this, there are a limited amount of editing suites available, therefore we could only edit when our specifically dedicated suite was free from use. Also, the film featured a quite instrumental piece in the background. We did not know the name of the specific piece and could not find it out either; therefore, we once again improvised and found a song that sounded very similar. Fortunately, we manage to complete the task before the set deadline.

From the task I have learnt that the preproduction stage is vital if you’re expecting to film the same location over a course of more than one filming session. Additionally, you cannot always rely on actors to be available as they may have other priorities. Overall, I was disappointed with the outcome of our video; however, this was due to the fact that me and my group knew the mistakes in it. When shown to the class, no one seemed to notice the mistakes that we could distinctly see.
